In the same spirit – reducing the place of the car in Lyon – the city authorities have put in place a very ambitious network of ’20mph zones’ in the city.
“As soon as you start expanding green modes of transport, in particular the bicycle, it is essential to limit the speed of cars,” points out Gilles Buna of the Green Party, secretary for Town Planning and Sustainable Development.
In 2001, the ’20mph zone’ applied only to a few roads in the very centre of Lyon’s old town, on the right bank of the Saône river. Today, it covers practically the whole of the 1st arrondissement – with the exception of the main roads along the river – as well as a good slice of the 4th (the Croix Rousse) and the Ile.
